Udo Pfleghar trained in Melbourne, Australia, and Regensburg, Germany, before being admitted to the Bar. Having worked in Munich for a law firm specialized in Intellectual Property (IP), he went to Spain in 1999 to join the European trademark and designs office, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trademarks and Designs) (OHIM) in Alicante. At OHIM (now EUIPO), he worked for several years as a senior trademark examiner, dealing with opposition and cancellation proceedings, representing the Office before the European courts in Luxembourg and training new staff.
On his return to Germany in 2004, he joined the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, where he was responsible for all matters related to trademarks, designs and domains as Head of the Group Trademark and Domain Law. Udo Pfleghar joined BEST Rechtsanwälte as a partner in January 2009.
He is specialized in trademark, design and domain law, and provides strategic counselling to clients on the most efficient and economical ways to combine the different types of protection to benefit from their differences and the possible synergies. He also advises clients frequently on issues of data protection, unfair competition and pharmaceutical advertising. Udo Pfleghar is a panelist for the .eu ADR proceedings and frequently speaks and publishes on IP issues.
He is also a lecturer in law at Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences, as well as being a member of the Law Committee of the European Communities Trade Mark Association (ECTA), the Head of the Intellectual Property Group of the German Australian Pacific Lawyers’ Association (GAPLA), and a member of the UNION of European Practitioners in Intellectual Property (UNION) and other professional organizations. He is an officially appointed translator for English and German.
